Arthur Tiojanco, creator of Just for Kicks
WBD: Tell us about Just For Kicks and how did it get started?
Arthur: Just For Kicks is a “round robin” style crew bboy battle where each crew gets to battle all of the other crews entered. There are no judges to decide who wins or loses and there is no prize money to be won. The crews are there to battle for fun! Hence the name, “Just For Kicks.” The first Just For Kicks was thrown in 2009 at the Guildford Recreation Center (GRC). The GRC wanted to hold a breakdance event in their facilities, but they had a rule of not having any prize money. Inspired by the International Breakdance Event (IBE)’s “all vs all” battles, I figured that it would a perfect way to have a battle with no prize money. And so Just For Kicks was created!
WBD: What inspired you to start dancing?
Arthur: To be honest, I kept dancing in high school because I wasn’t the best basketball player. In high school everyone is trying to get themselves known and I wasn’t the best student, wasn’t the best athlete and didn’t really stand out. When I started dancing I saw that it wasn’t something that many people in my school were doing. So I became known as the breakdancer and I got my high school identity. After that, dancing with my crew, FloorStorm, inspired me to keep dancing and keep progressing.
WBD: What do we have to look forward to in the upcoming Just For Kicks 2012?
Arthur: Great music being played by one of my favorite DJs, DJ FlipOut is always something to look forward to. Also, fun and exciting battles where the bboys and bgirls are giving it their all, not for a cash prize, but just because they love dancing!
